Smoke Alarms: Testing, Batteries, Ten Year Rule
How a smoke alarm fails, what the test button proves, and the checks that keep a household alarm working through its ten year life.

A smoke alarm usually fails because its sensor has aged, not because its battery died. The test button proves the horn and the circuit work, and it proves nothing about the chamber that smells smoke.
How does a smoke alarm fail?
An alarm fails in one of three ways, and only one of them announces itself. A household check is reliable when it covers the battery, the date code, the dust and the mounting, and the small hand tools that hold a tiny part still are the same idea at a smaller scale: a check is only as good as the thing that holds it steady.
The first is a dead battery. An ionization or photoelectric alarm on a battery alone will chirp when the cell runs down, and that chirp is the one failure a resident hears. A sealed ten year alarm does not chirp for a battery, because the battery is not meant to be replaced; it chirps at the end of its life, and that is a different signal.
The second is a dirty or blocked sensing chamber. Photoelectric alarms use an optical chamber that scatters light onto a sensor when smoke enters. Dust, cooking grease, insects and paint spray settle in that chamber and either blind the sensor or set it off at nothing. The alarm still passes a test button press, because the button does not test the chamber. This is the failure that hides.
The third is age. The sensing element and the electronics drift. The National Fire Protection Association and the US Fire Administration both point to the ten year replacement rule for the alarm itself, not just the battery. A 2015 alarm in a hallway in 2026 is past its service life even if it chirps on command.
A fourth failure is mechanical: the alarm is not on the ceiling. It was taken down for painting, or it fell, or it was moved to a shelf because it went off during cooking. An alarm in a drawer protects nothing.
What does the test button prove, and what does it not prove?
The test button proves the horn sounds, the battery or wiring can carry the current, and the circuit board responds. That is a real check, and it is worth doing once a month.
The test button does not prove the sensing chamber works. On most models the button simulates an alarm condition electronically, downstream of the sensor. A chamber packed with dust will still pass. A chamber whose sensor has drifted will still pass. The button is a check on the alarm as a noisemaker, not as a detector.
Some manufacturers sell canned test smoke for a truer check, and a few alarms have a self test that exercises the chamber. Where a household has neither, the practical answer is to keep the chamber clean and to replace the alarm on schedule rather than to trust the button alone.
How often should a smoke alarm be tested?
Once a month, by hand, on every alarm in the home. The US Fire Administration and NFPA both give the monthly press as the household routine, and both give the ten year replacement as the end of the line for the unit.
Batteries are the second schedule. A replaceable battery goes in at least once a year, and many households tie it to a date they will remember, such as the change of clocks. A sealed ten year alarm needs no battery change, and its battery is not user replaceable; when it chirps at end of life, the whole unit goes.
A carbon monoxide alarm follows its own schedule, and combination smoke and CO units follow the shorter of the two. The manufacturer's printed instructions on the back of the unit are the schedule that applies to that model, and they are the ones to read.
What does a household check actually cover?
A full check is five steps, and it takes about ten minutes for a whole house.
Press and hold the test button until the horn sounds. If nothing sounds, the unit is dead or the battery is flat, and it comes down.
Read the date code on the back. Most alarms carry a manufacture date, and ten years from that date is the replacement point. Write the replacement year on the unit with a marker if the label is hard to read.
Vacuum the chamber vents. A soft brush attachment on a household vacuum, run along the slots, lifts the dust that blinds a photoelectric sensor. Do not spray anything into the alarm and do not paint it.
Check the mounting. The bracket should hold the unit flat to the ceiling or high on the wall, away from a dead air corner, a door, a window and a supply register. A unit that swings or sits loose is a unit that will be taken down and forgotten.
Check the coverage. One alarm per level, one inside each sleeping room and one in the hallway outside them, and one in the basement and attic if those spaces are used. Interconnected alarms, where one sounds all, are the arrangement the codes favor for new construction.
Why do small tools matter in a household check?
A check fails when the person doing it cannot reach, cannot hold or cannot see the part. The alarm is on a ceiling, the date code is on the back, the bracket screw is small, and the vacuum brush is awkward at arm's length.
A step stool that lives in the hall, a flashlight kept with it, a small screwdriver that fits the bracket, and a vacuum brush that reaches the vents are the tools that turn a monthly press into a real inspection. The principle is the same one a bench worker knows: a small part held still and lit well can be examined, and a small part held in the hand at arm's length cannot.
What about the ten year rule?
The ten year rule is a replacement rule for the alarm, not a battery rule. NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, and the US Fire Administration both state that smoke alarms should be replaced when they are ten years old, and the reason is sensor drift and accumulated contamination, not battery chemistry.
A sealed ten year alarm is built to that number. Its lithium cell is sized to outlast the sensor, and the unit is designed to be thrown away whole. A replaceable battery alarm can outlive several batteries, and it still reaches the ten year line.
A hardwired alarm with a battery backup has the same ten year line. The house wiring does not extend the sensor's life.
When a unit is replaced, the old one goes to household hazardous waste if the local program takes it, because of the battery, and the new one gets its date written on the back before it goes up.
What the desk brings the reader
A monthly press on the button is a start, not a check. The chamber, the date code and the mount are the parts that fail quietly, and they are the parts a household can reach with a step stool, a flashlight and a vacuum brush. The ten year rule closes the loop: an alarm that has served its decade comes down, whatever the button says.
